Pest control for Airports

An airport is one of the most complex and demanding environments for pest control. Vast runways and aprons coexist with terminals that handle thousands of passengers a day, concession kitchens, cargo warehouses and perimeter zones full of vegetation. Each of these areas attracts different wildlife and pests, and a poorly managed incident does more than hurt the airport's image: it can compromise operational safety and the continuity of flights. That is why airport pest control demands a technical, coordinated and continuous approach.

Pests and challenges at airports

The sheer scale of an airport and the variety of its areas create very specific challenges:

  • Wildlife management: birds on runways and aprons create a real risk of aircraft impact (bird strike), one of the critical aviation-safety issues that must be handled in coordination with the airport's operational safety teams.
  • Rodents in terminals, concession kitchens and cargo warehouses, drawn by the constant flow of food, waste and stored goods.
  • Crawling and flying insects in food courts, waiting areas and service zones, where the flow of people never stops.
  • Large surfaces and extensive perimeters with vegetation, drains and bodies of water that can become harborage and breeding sites if left unmonitored.

Specific risks

The primary risk at an airport is aviation safety: wildlife on runways can cause aircraft impacts during takeoff or landing. On top of that come sanitary risks in food areas and reputational impact given the high passenger volume. Wildlife and pest management must be coordinated with operational teams so it never interferes with runway activity, keeping operations running without interruption.

Our approach

We apply Integrated Pest Management (IPM) adapted to airport scale. We start with a diagnosis of every zone —terminal, aprons, cargo, kitchens and perimeter— to identify attraction points and entry routes. We prioritize exclusion and environmental modification (sealing access points, waste management, control of vegetation and of the bodies of water that draw wildlife) over chemical application, reserving treatments for specific points with methods appropriate to each area.

We set up monitoring stations and tracking records that reveal trends and let us act before a population grows. For wildlife management linked to bird strike hazards, we coordinate with the airport's operational safety teams. All work is carried out in line with NOM-256-SSA1-2012 and uses products registered with COFEPRIS, performed by staff trained to operate in restricted-access environments.
