Pest control for Silos
A silo stores bulk grain for months, and during that time the product can deteriorate from within if it is not watched. Pest control in silos is nothing like a warehouse: here the priority is stored-grain insects, which breed inside the grain mass, taking advantage of heat and moisture. A serious program combines temperature monitoring, sampling and specialized control to protect tonnes of product whose value grows as the season advances.
Most common pests in silos
Stored grain attracts very specific pests, on top of the constant pressure of rodents and birds around the structure:
- Grain and maize weevils, which bore into the kernels and breed within the stored mass.
- Stored-product moths and beetles that infest the top layer and the conveyors.
- Rodents prowling the base, receiving pits and elevators in search of spilled grain.
- Birds perching and nesting on the structure, contaminating discharge areas with droppings.
Risks to the operation
A stored-grain insect infestation can ruin entire lots: it reduces weight, heats the mass, encourages molds and mycotoxins, and leads the buyer or processing plant to reject the grain. Rodents contaminate with droppings and gnaw the wiring of elevators and motors, creating a fire risk. And grain dust, combined with poor management, makes conditions worse. The damage is not always visible until the silo is opened, which is why continuous monitoring is key.
Standards and monitoring
We apply NOM-256-SSA1-2012 with products registered with COFEPRIS and staff trained in grain handling. We implement a documented stored-product pest monitoring program — grain sampling, traps and temperature control — with trend records and traceability, aligned with HACCP- and BRCGS-type audits when the grain is destined for consumption. All evidence is ready for buyers, receiving plants and authorities.
How we work
We use Integrated Pest Management (IPM) applied to stored grain. We combine sampling and monitoring of the mass with traps to detect insects early, rodent control with numbered perimeter stations at the base and elevators, exclusion and cleanup of spilled grain, and bird control on the structure. We recommend good aeration and grain-rotation practices to keep temperatures that do not favor pest breeding. Every intervention is documented.
