Pest control for Data centers
In a data center, every minute counts. These are facilities where service availability (uptime) is the most valuable asset, and where a seemingly minor failure can translate into costly downtime. Pest control here is not a cosmetic service: it is a measure to protect critical infrastructure. Rodents, insects and the moisture associated with pest harborage can put cabling, sensitive equipment and the operational continuity that many clients take for granted at risk.
Pests and challenges in data centers
The main challenge is protecting sensitive equipment without introducing additional risks:
- Rodents gnawing cabling: this is the most critical risk. A single rodent can damage power or data cables and cause an electrical failure or service outage, with consequences that are hard to quantify.
- The need for control without aggressive chemicals near sensitive electronic equipment, where treatments that leave residue, vapors or moisture on the racks simply cannot be used.
- Raised access floors, dropped ceilings and cable trays that act as hidden routes and harborage for rodents and insects.
- Entry points through ducts, cable penetrations and maintenance access that require permanent sealing and exclusion.
Specific risks
The central risk is operational continuity. Cable damage caused by rodents can lead to an outage that affects multiple clients and jeopardizes availability agreements. Added to this is the risk of an electrical fire originating from gnawed cables. Given the nature of the equipment, any intervention must minimize chemical exposure and avoid interfering with the site's cooling, power and monitoring systems.
Our approach
We apply Integrated Pest Management (IPM) with an emphasis on exclusion and monitoring rather than heavy chemical application. The first line of defense is physical: sealing cable penetrations, ducts and access points, controlling moisture and managing the perimeter so pests find no route inside. Within rooms holding sensitive equipment we favor non-chemical methods and discreet monitoring stations that never compromise operations.
Continuous monitoring detects early activity before a rodent ever reaches a cable tray. When a treatment is needed, we apply it in perimeter and service areas, using products registered with COFEPRIS and in line with NOM-256-SSA1-2012, coordinating access with the data center staff to respect their security protocols.
