Pest control for Operating Rooms

The operating room is the most critical area of any medical facility: a sterile environment where asepsis must be guaranteed in every procedure. Here, pest control allows no margin of tolerance, because the presence of a single insect directly compromises the integrity of the surgical field and exposes the patient to serious infection risk during an intervention. Pest management in operating rooms is an unavoidable part of infection control and hospital biosafety.

Pests and risks in operating rooms

Although the operating room is a controlled zone, pests can enter from peripheral areas (sterile-supply departments, corridors, ducts) and break the chain of sterility:

  • Cockroaches: carry bacteria on their exoskeleton and can reach instruments, surgical gowns or sterile fields, voiding asepsis.
  • Flies: introduce microorganisms directly onto the open surgical field, one of the most serious contamination routes.
  • Rodents: compromise air ducts and positive-pressure systems, and contaminate the adjacent sterile-material store.
  • Ants: travel in trails toward organic residue and can colonize sterile zones through joints and access points.

Consequences of inaction

A failure in pest control within the surgical area can translate into surgical-site infections, cross-contamination and extreme risk for already vulnerable or immunocompromised patients. Consequences include the suspension of procedures, sanitary penalties, loss of hospital accreditation, and legal and reputational liability of the highest severity.

Applicable standards

Pest management in operating rooms must comply with NOM-256-SSA1-2012 and align with the COFEPRIS sanitary license and the facility's infection-control protocols. Documentary traceability —logbooks, perimeter-station maps and technical data sheets for the products used— is indispensable in hospital accreditation and certification processes.

Our approach

In operating rooms we apply Integrated Pest Management (IPM) with a perimeter and exclusion focus: the goal is to prevent entry, not to fumigate the sterile area. We work on buffer zones, ducts, joints and access points, with monitoring stations, sealing and targeted low-toxicity baits placed outside the critical field. We coordinate every intervention with operating-room staff to respect asepsis timing and sterilization cycles, and we deliver full documentation of each visit.
