Pest control for Green Areas

Green areas —parks, medians, shared gardens in residential complexes, corporate campuses and the landscaped zones of shopping centers— are public spaces where people, pets and rich vegetation coexist. Because of their size, frequent irrigation and open access, they need pest control designed with public health in mind: reducing the pests that affect those who enjoy them, without compromising ecological balance or the pollinators that sustain these spaces. Management must be broad, methodical and environmentally aware.

Pests and challenges in green areas

The scale and public use of green areas pose particular challenges:

  • Mosquitoes breeding in standing water: irrigation systems, fountains, ground depressions and flooded chambers, with the resulting risk of disease transmission in busy spaces.
  • Wasps and hornets nesting in trees, street furniture and structures, posing a sting risk to visitors, children and pets.
  • Ants and ticks in lawns and shaded areas, affecting both the people and the pets that frequent these spaces.
  • Plant pests —aphids, mealybugs and mites— that damage trees, shrubs and ornamental areas, harming both the health and the appearance of the landscape.
  • Rodents sheltering in burrows, leaf litter and nearby waste areas, which can migrate into adjoining buildings.

Specific risks

The main risk in a green area is public health: because these are open-access, high-traffic spaces, mosquitoes, wasp stings and the presence of ticks directly affect large numbers of people. Added to this is the risk of poor management: indiscriminate applications in open spaces can harm bees and other pollinators and disrupt the environment. Any treatment must be safe for users and respectful of beneficial wildlife.

Our approach

We apply Integrated Pest Management (IPM) adapted to open, public-use spaces. We start with breeding-site management: identifying and eliminating standing water that produces mosquitoes, correcting drainage and reducing harborage such as leaf litter and waste accumulations. We favor prevention, targeted nest removal and source control over blanket applications, and we schedule treatments at times and with products that minimize the impact on pollinators and visitors.

Periodic monitoring of the entire area lets us anticipate seasonal problems, such as mosquito peaks during the rainy season. When intervention is needed, we use products registered with COFEPRIS and in line with NOM-256-SSA1-2012, applied with judgment to protect people, pets and the bees and other pollinators that keep these green areas healthy.
